Martha Jaenicke - fiber and sequential arts

I aim to explore the fantastical as a societal lens. My work addresses how fantasy deconstructs human behavior, and an evolving motif of portals: entrances and exits to or from one state of being to another.

Common themes in fantastical stories or morality tales often reflect aspects of the society that told/tells them, allowing us an avenue to speculate on collective fears, hopes and wishes of people long gone, as well as a window into what affects humanity today. The layer of separation from personal life that fantasy is afforded allows it to be, at times, more vulnerable than reality. My work is an attempt to exist in this space.

Those who don't believe in magic will never find it. - Roald Dahl
